When issues like this are presented to the community, the gravity of the situation is often not fully conveyed to the audience. They can't see all the removed content that tells the story of how destructive that person was to the community. Of course, we \u003Cem>always\u003C/em> encourage discussion of general moderation issues on the \u003Ca href=\"http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/07/new-per-site-metas/\">per-site metas\u003C/a>.\u003C/p>\n\u003C/li>\n\u003Cli>\n\u003Cp>Two pieces of advice about moderation discussions: try to stick to generalized discussions about a broad \u003Cem>class\u003C/em> of moderation, without delving into minutiae specific to one user and one situation. To keep it useful to the community, avoid devolving into a  laundry list of every tiny thing that happened to every user. Also, try to limit discussion about moderation to those users who have an \u003Cem>actual connection to the site and these moderation events\u003C/em>, and aren't just stopping by to opine about some abstract, perceived wrong on the internet. (insert XKCD cartoon here)\u003C/p>\n\u003C/li>\n\u003Cli>\n\u003Cp>Sam Saffron has been \u003Ca href=\"http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/06/welcome-stack-overflow-valued-associate-00008/\">working remotely for Stack Exchange\u003C/a> from Australia for about a year now. Sam came to our attention as an avid participant on Stack Overflow and meta, as well as his own homegrown Stack Overflow inspired support tool he wrote, \u003Ca href=\"http://community-tracker.com/\">Community Tracker\u003C/a>. In addition to being the lead on the \u003Ca href=\"http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/12/re-launching-stack-exchange-data-explorer/\">Stack Exchange Data Explorer\u003C/a>, Sam's touched almost every area of the engine at this point: improvements to \u003Ca href=\"http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/07/improvements-to-badge-system/\">badges\u003C/a>, \u003Ca href=\"http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/10/membership-has-its-privileges/\">privileges\u003C/a>, \u003Ca href=\"http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2011/02/suggested-edits-and-edit-review/\">edits\u003C/a>, \u003Ca href=\"http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2011/03/redesigned-users-page/\">users page\u003C/a>, \u003Ca href=\"http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2011/03/redesigned-tags-page/\">tags page\u003C/a> …\u003C/p>\n\u003C/li>\n\u003Cli>\n\u003Cp>We're starting to build a feature we call \u003Cstrong>emacs.stackexchange.com\u003C/strong>, which essentially gives users a filtered view of Stack Overflow to specific topic groups, as represented by a set of tags. We have historically \u003Ca href=\"http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/09/factionalism-site-or-tag/\">shut down Area 51 proposals that would factionalize Stack Overflow\u003C/a>, and although we feel this is the correct decision, we are sympathetic to the underlying concern. Stack Exchange sites are intended to be groups of topics, identified by tags, that are of broad interest to people who all love a topic -- like, say, \u003Cem>programming\u003C/em>. This is fine when you follow a large tag like [java] or [c#], but what about when you follow 20 small tags? Yes, \u003Ca href=\"http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2011/04/improved-tag-sets/\">you can set up a tag filter\u003C/a>, but it might be nice to have some default groupings for certain popular sub-areas -- thus, emacs.stackexchange.com instead of the Area 51 site proposal for emacs.\u003C/p>\n\u003C/li>\n\u003Cli>\n\u003Cp>The bedrock guideline of \u003Ca href=\"http://area51.stackexchange.com/faq\">our Area 51 site creation process\u003C/a> is, \"I'd like to ask a question about {x} but there's no place on the Stack Exchange network to do so\". We've been a bit disappointed that the CSTheory community has been \u003Ca href=\"http://meta.cstheory.stackexchange.com/questions/947/is-theoretical-computer-science-too-narrow\">unwilling to accept an expansion of their scope\u003C/a>, because there are technical computer science questions on Stack Overflow that \u003Ca href=\"http://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/92563/ogod-why-are-we-helping-spread-misinformation\">aren't being handled correctly\u003C/a> and have no other place to go.\u003C/p>\n\u003C/li>\n\u003Cli>\n\u003Cp>The \u003Ca href=\"http://german.stackexchange.com/\">German\u003C/a> and \u003Ca href=\"http://japanese.stackexchange.com/\">Japanese\u003C/a> proposals are now public! These are our first \u003Ca href=\"http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2011/04/stack-overflow-around-the-world/\">baby steps into other languages\u003C/a>, as guided by the community. It's already caused a bit of an issue as we \"advertise\" popular questions to the network that may have very few words in English. This also comes up with \u003Ca href=\"http://judaism.stackexchange.com/\">\u003C/a>\u003Ca href=\"http://judaism.stackexchange.com/\">http://judaism.stackexchange.com/\u003C/a> questions which can have quite a bit of Hebrew in them.\u003C/p>\n\u003C/li>\n\u003Cli>\n\u003Cp>As Joel builds out \u003Ca href=\"http://stackexchange.theresumator.com/apply/5bbnOo/Community-Evangelism-Team.html\">the CHAOS (NYC community development and evangelism) team\u003C/a> out, they start with a generalized online SAT/ACT style aptitude test.\nWhich Jeff did not pass. :) But the far more interesting test that we're giving candidates is what we call the \"Internet competency test\" -- how would you test someone to see if they are experts at using the internet? How to find things, how to send email, how to link, what \"The Facebooks\" and \"The Twitters\" are, and so forth? Building such a test is an interesting thought exercise. How would you do it?\u003C/p>\n\u003C/li>\n\u003Cli>\n\u003Cp>A question from the chat room -- are there any metrics around how much \u003Ca href=\"http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2011/02/suggested-edits-and-edit-review/\">the new suggested edits feature\u003C/a> has improved the site? One thing we've learned is that \"simple\" edits to fix layout (code formatting) and proper English go a long, long way towards increasing the overall quality of the experience. At Zappos, \u003Ca href=\"http://behind-the-enemy-lines.blogspot.com/2011/04/want-to-improve-sales-fix-grammar-and.html\">they went so far as assigned Mechanical Turk tasks to edit and improve shoe reviews!\u003C/a> We have noticed that a) some users are hesitant to approve edits that totally rewrite the post, even when it's necessary and b) we don't get \u003Cem>nearly\u003C/em> as many anonymous edits as we expected; most edits come from existing or registered users.\u003C/p>\n\u003C/li>\n\u003Cli>\n\u003Cp>The intent of editing questions and answers is to offer more permanent resources that can evolve over time. It is important to displace the old, out of date information that is often entombed in Google; for example with \u003Ca href=\"http://webapps.stackexchange.com/questions/15945/keyboard-shortcut-to-access-the-first-link-in-a-google-search-page\">Keyboard shortcut to access the first link in a Google search page?\u003C/a> Jeff was surprised to find that almost all the searches he did produced old, obsolete, and sort of incorrect results -- so he rolled up his sleeves and created a definitive answer, then edited the question and other answers. Hopefully future internet travellers will find this correct and up to date answer… and they can click edit to improve it, too!\u003C/p>\n\u003C/li>\n\u003Cli>\n\u003Cp>We are open sourcing our \u003Ca href=\"http://code.google.com/p/mvc-mini-profiler/\">.NET web performance mini-profiler\u003C/a>.
