Stack Gives Back is an annual tradition where we donate $100 to a charity on behalf of each moderator on the Stack Exchange network. We are thrilled to announce that we donated $49,000 USD, distributed between seven different organizations that each do important work. The amount that went to each charity was determined by the percentage of moderators that selected that organization in a poll that we distributed to them.

Learn more about the organizations and see how the funds were distributed:

$18,963 to Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières)

Doctors without Borders is an independent global movement providing medical aid where it's needed most.

$10,829 to Electronic Frontier Foundation

The Electronic Frontier Foundation is the leading nonprofit organization defending digital privacy, free speech, and innovation.

$7,056 to Trans Lifeline

Trans Lifeline is a grassroots hotline and microgrants 501(c)(3) non-profit organization offering direct emotional and financial support to trans people in crisis—for the trans community, by the trans community.

$5,390 to Rainforest Alliance

The Rainforest Alliance is an international non-profit organization working to build an alliance to protect forests, improve the livelihoods of farmers and forest communities, promote their human rights, and help them mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis.

$4,312 to Girls Who Code

$2,156 to First Nations Development Institute

First Nations Development Institute improves economic conditions for Native Americans through direct financial grants, technical assistance and training, and advocacy and policy.

$294 to Digital Undivided

Digital Undivided’s mission is to create an equitable entrepreneurial ecosystem where there is access to investments and capital for all.

Since the inception of the program in 2009, we have donated $633,500 to worthy organizations on behalf of Stack Exchange Moderators. This year the Community Management team partnered with Stack’s Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) to refresh the list of charities Stack donates to. The ERGs are voluntary groups that employees participate in, centered around shared identities and/or interests, serving as a space for support and connection. Working together we came up with a well-rounded list of organizations for moderators to consider donating to, representing a variety of causes that are meaningful to members of the Stack Exchange community.

We would like to offer a huge thank you to every community member who contributed to the Stack Exchange network in 2024! Giving your time, energy, and expertise to build this collective knowledge base is deeply appreciated. These donations particularly celebrate the moderators who do much of the unsung maintenance work that keeps all the moving parts across the network in place. Moderators, the passion you devote to the sites you moderate and contribute to has positively impacted learners all around the world, and we are proud to give back to our broader global community on your behalf to further amplify that impact.
