Renewing Chat on Stack Overflow

Improving the place where developers have real conversations and real collaboration

Chat is making a comeback!

Chat first launched on Stack Overflow in October 2010 as a “hypothetical third place” for “real time, interactive collaboration.” Fifteen years later, a new generation of developers are joining the platform and looking for a collaborative space to meet others that can support their goals. In the most recent Stack Overflow Survey, 37% of Gen Z developers are turning to chat as a resource for their learning, and Stack Overflow is making finding those communities and conversations more at the forefront of the public platform.

We're excited to announce that Stack Overflow Chat is being enhanced and revitalized with a new focus on supporting a larger community of developers. This product refresh is centered on three key areas: improving safety measures to welcome more developers, enhancing onboarding, and boosting the overall accessibility of Chat. Our goal is to create a renewed and protected conversational space that is available to a broader audience.

We want Chat to be the place developers go for workshopping, brainstorming, and open conversation about topics that broaden outside the question-and-answer forum. We've learned from the developer community that there's still skepticism around AI-generated answers, so having spaces where humans can collaborate, discuss, and validate solutions is essential. It offers reassurance and practical support for technologists adopting new approaches that AI doesn’t.

Global research agrees that peer support and interaction is crucial for a technologist’s learning and growth. These peer-to-peer connections are incredibly important for learners at any level, so we have created both the Stack Overflow Lobby and Stack Exchange Lobby to host socializing between peers along with real-time conversation between those who need help and those who can offer it. It’s a welcoming place for newcomers and experts alike to receive guidance, insights, and connection from a community that spans vast knowledge and experience.

More than just help: Chat connects developers

Beyond problem-solving, Chat is a place to connect with technologists in a casual way outside our canonical question-and-answer format. Over the years, the community has built chatrooms on a vast array of technical topics, spanning everything from technical challenges to industry trends. In these spaces, we’ve seen friendships forged over late-night debugging sessions, discussions on the latest industry news, and general hangout spaces for users to connect.

From users solving tricky bugs in minutes with real-time feedback to stories of local area meet-ups where developers connect and discuss technology changes, Chat has been a place where users make real connections. It’s where users share thanks and appreciation for the answers and support that the Stack community provides. These relationships and the spirit of sharing knowledge have become more important than ever in an AI-driven world.

We understand that your interests may span beyond technical conversations during your coding sessions. The broader Stack Exchange Chat network is a vast universe of conversations on everything from the intricacies of mathematics and the latest gaming strategies to the nuances of language learning, cooking, photography, and even personal finance. Engage with community members who share your passions and expertise in dedicated chatrooms and broaden your connections.

What's new and what's coming?

We have a roadmap for improving Stack Overflow’s Chat product through 2026. Recent updates have included:

  • Making Chat more discoverable through the left navigation sidebar on Stack Overflow’s homepage
  • Updates to the user interface that include a new landing page and exploration tab to find rooms that appeal to your interests
  • Highlighting rooms based on user-watched tags and room activity, and building chatrooms that permit all users to start participating in Chat immediately.

Additionally, safety remains a high priority in this product's update. We are improving safety features to watch for spam and bad actors, enhancing our flagging for Chat, and optimizing moderation tools for the chat experience. We believe these enhancements are crucial for protecting our community and we’ll be rolling out more improvements to establish Chat as a safe place for open conversations.

Chat has always been an open window into the lively conversations happening across our sites. As we look ahead, we want Chat to be a welcoming and inclusive companion, continuing the collaborative and knowledge-sharing mission at the heart of Stack Overflow. We look forward to what the next decade of community chat brings.
